Peter Miller was born in the district of Lautern in the Palatinate (Pfalz) Germany. He came to America in 1730 and began practising as a Reformed Minister. He left the Reformed church in 1735 to join the Ephrata Cloister and took the name Brother Jabez. After Conrad Beisel's death he became the Cloister's leader
